What is a spinal cord injury:

A spinal cord injury is any injury to the spine that causes a fracture or dislocation of the vertebrae in the spine. Damage to the spinal cord occurs when pieces of vertebrae tear the cord tissue. There are 2 types of spinal cord injuries:

  • Complete: damage to the spinal cord is complete and there is no communication between the nerves above and below the injury. As a result, there will be no movement or sensation below the level of the injury. The victim will be paralyzed.
  • Incomplete: Damage to the spinal cord is not as severe and there is some communication between the areas above and below the injury. You may be able to move some of your limbs or feel sensations in some parts of your body below the injury.

Where your spinal cord is injured plays an important role in determining the severity of your injuries. The spinal cord is comprised of four sections: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral vertebrae. Injuries to the neck involve mainly the cervical vertebrae and complete or incomplete spinal cord injuries to the cervical area result in the most devastating consequences. If the injury is complete, victims may not be able to move any of their extremities resulting in quadriplegia. Injuries above the C-4 vertebrae will also require the victim to breathe on a ventilator.

In addition to loss of sensation and movement, victims with spinal cord injuries may also experience:

  • loss of sexual functioning
  • loss of bladder control
  • loss of bowel control
  • inability to breathe
  • reduced body temperature control
  • inability to sweat
  • chronic pain

While automobile accidents are the #1 cause of spinal cord injuries, injuries to the spine can occur anywhere. In some situations, injuries to the spinal cord are a direct result of another party's carelessness or negligence. Spinal cord injuries can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat and no matter how adequately you are insured, many victims find that their insurance policies are quickly exhausted. In these situations it is important to contact a qualified personal injury attorney specializing in spinal cord injury immediately to ensure that your claim is handled quickly. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries including lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering and loss of lifestyle.
